Around Town
Austin is a Zip Car and Car2Go city!
Hourly rental cars are all around the central Austin area. Lyft and Uber are also in Austin! Even though they are technically "illegal", they seem to be proliferating. There are also tons of pedicabs driving around downtown on weekend nights. They operate on a tip-only basis and most only accept cash. |
Capital Metro
Austin does have a bus system, but if you're from a real public transportation city in the U.S., you won't be impressed. Most buses run every 20-30 minutes with reduced schedules on the weekends. On the upside, if you're sticking central and going only north-south, you'll have tons of bus route options and you won't have to wait that long for a bus. They offer several types of passes (daily passes $2, 7-day passes $9) in addition to paying $1.00 for a single ride. There is a new "premium" rapid bus service. These accordion-style buses charge $2 for a single ride or $3 for a day pass. |
Bike Rentals
There are a bunch of different places (many are centered around the Barton Springs/Zilker Park area, about 1.5 mi from Firehouse) where you can rent bikes. There are also 11 bike-sharing stations around the downtown area. Austin is mostly bike-friendly city (just don't compare us to Portland, okay?) with bike lanes on most of the main roads. October will be perfect biking weather. Also, all the buses have space for two bikes...when they aren't already in use. |
